If you split your year between up north and the Suncoast, your car probably sits for months at a time — and that brings a few predictable key problems. Here's what I see most from snowbirds around Sarasota, Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, and how to get ahead of it.
The dead fob after a long sit
A key fob's coin-cell battery drains slowly even when unused, so the classic snowbird return is a fob that won't lock, unlock or start the car. Often a fresh CR2032 fixes it — see how to change a fob battery. If the fob itself has failed, I can replace and program a new one right at your place.
The single-key problem
Many seasonal cars came with just one key, and the second one is "somewhere up north." If that one key gets lost down here, you're into a full all-keys-lost job. It's far cheaper to have me cut a spare while you're in town.
Second cars and older fobs
Snowbird households often keep an older second car here year-round. Worn ignitions and tired remotes are common — I handle ignition repair and fob repair on-site, so you're not towing an old car to a dealer.
Before you head back north
A 10-minute visit before you leave — fresh fob battery, a spare cut, a quick ignition check — saves a frustrating first day back next season. I come to you anywhere from Venice to Parrish.
