You sit down, turn the key… and nothing. A key that won't turn — or won't come back out — is one of the most common calls I get. Before you force it (please don't), here's what's usually going on.

Quick checks to try first

  • Wheel lock: if you parked with the wheels turned, the steering lock can bind the key. Gently rock the wheel left–right while lightly turning the key.
  • Not fully in Park (automatics): nudge the shifter firmly into Park.
  • Dead battery (push-to-start): a weak fob or car battery can stop the button working — see the fob battery guide.
  • Worn key: a heavily worn copy may not align the pins. Try your other key if you have one.

When it's the ignition itself

If the key is fine but the cylinder feels gritty, sticks, or won't turn at all, the ignition cylinder is likely worn or failing. Forcing it risks snapping the key off inside — which turns a simple fix into a broken-key extraction.

How I fix it

I come to you and repair or replace the ignition cylinder on-site, and where possible match it to your existing key so you're not carrying two. See ignition repair. If a key did snap off, I'll extract it cleanly and cut you a fresh one.
