Key fob prices are all over the map, and there's a reason: a simple remote and a push-to-start smart key are very different parts. Here's what actually sets the price, so you can budget before you call.

It comes down to the type of fob

  • Basic remote (separate key + remote) — the least expensive to supply and program.
  • Remote head / flip key — key blade, transponder chip and remote in one; mid-range.
  • Push-to-start smart key (proximity fob) — the priciest, because the part costs more and the programming is more involved.

Your year, make and model decide which one you need — see car key types explained.

OEM vs aftermarket

For many vehicles you can choose a factory (OEM) fob or a quality aftermarket one that costs less. I carry both and will tell you honestly which makes sense for your car — more in OEM vs aftermarket.

Locksmith vs dealer

The dealer typically charges a premium and may want the car towed in. I come to you across Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice and the surrounding area, program the fob on the spot, and it's almost always less. See key fob replacement and programming.
